Chocolate covered pretzels are an easy, delicious, and a somewhat nutritious party favor or bake sale treat. I have made these many times for: Easter, the school play bake sale, a party and more. You can also adapt the ingredients so they are nut-free and peanut-free. You have to read your labels and find pretzels and chocolate (and sprinkles) that are free of trace amounts of nuts and peanuts, and just because it doesn’t say it on the label doesn’t mean it’s not. When in doubt call the manufacturer. If you don’t have an allergy to be concerned with you can choose any type of chocolate. I prefer dark chocolate. I like it because it’s rich and creamy and easy to work with. White chocolate is a nice alternative, but I find it’s not as smooth and creamy, but the combination of the dark chocolate and white look amazing. It’s an eye catching party favor!

Directions:
Set up two or three large cookie sheets (that will fit in your refrigerator) with tin foil or parchment paper and set aside. Put the dark chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for about 2 minutes. Stir the chocolate really well and set aside. Then, do the same with the white chocolate chips. They will not be as smooth and silky to work with. You may have to reheat the white chocolate chips again, because if they sit too long they will solidify and get clumpy. Take the end of the pretzel rod and dip it into the dark chocolate and twirl over the bowl to disregard any excess. Then place them on the cookie sheet, keeping space between each one.

Now is when you can get creative! Work with one sprinkle (ie confetti, cookies and cream or chocolate) at a time because you don’t want the sprinkles to mix up on the cookie sheet. Another cute idea, as seen in this photo, is to drizzle the white chocolate over the dark chocolate coated pretzel using a narrow spoon, but be sure it’s melted enough or it will clump. You can also dip the end of the pretzel rod in the white chocolate. The white chocolate tends to get clumpy, so the dark chocolate drizzled over it covers any clumps and bumps. Once you have added your sprinkles or drizzled the chocolate, put everything in the frig for 15 minutes. If I am working with the sprinkles I will let them set in frig for a few minutes, then and while they are still wet, take them out and add more sprinkles to be sure everything is coated. Then I place the sheets back in the frig for 15 minutes to set.

After about 15 minutes, I carefully release the pretzel from the tin foil or parchment paper and set aside. Then once they are completely dried, I put two inside each party favor bag and use a twist tie to close. You can get these at Michael’s. Be sure they are food safe bags. If you want to customize it for a party, you can make labels on sites like Vista Print and seal the bag with the label. Or if you are really creative, create your own logo using sites like dafont to access free fonts (some you have to pay for) and use free artwork images (some you have to pay for) to design your own logo, then upload the logo onto Vista Print and print the label. They will call you a creative genius!
